This is my 2016 video tour of the West Oaks Mall located in Ocoee, Florida — about 31 minutes drive from Downtown Orlando.
West Oaks Mall has 115 store spaces; a food court, and a 14-screen AMC theater. The mall is a good size, just over 1 million square feet of retail space. Putting that into context, the largest mall in America, King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania, has close to 3 million square feet of retail space with 450 stores. The Mall of America in Minneapolis has the most retail spaces with 500. A couple of anchor stores at this mall have closed including Belk Department Store in 2008, and Sears in 2013. JC Penney’s and Dillard’s Clearance Center are still open. I have visited this mall on several occasions and would best describe it as a discount movie theater with a mostly empty hallway attached to it. The busiest location in the mall appears to be the discount movie theater, but this place is more than just a movie theater with a hallway attached. There’s also a play area for the kids, a carousal, a photo booth and plenty of free parking. The mall opened around 1996. So it’s a little over 20 years old. A major redevelopment project is planned, but I haven’t seen much evidence of this, unless you include the conversion from retail to office space. Xerox has taken over the old Sears building, for example. The future plans include more office space, possible hotel space, fancy restaurants, and even some residential housing units. It remains to be seen. Time will tell. For now, the mall is open from 10 to 9 Monday – Saturday and 12 to 6 on Sundays.
