You’ll find plenty to keep you occupied in the small historic town of Kissimmee. It lies at the doorstep of Walt Disney World theme parks, but you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars visiting them.

There are many cheap and free activities near-by.

Old Town is a fairground/amusement park, shopping and entertainment district all in one. It’s themed on a turn of the century Florida boardwalk and it’s main draw is the weekly ‘cruise nights’ where classic/antique cars from yester year are paraded through the streets.

The best thing about Old Town is that it’s free to enter. You will have to pay for amusement rides and anything from the many shops and restaurants.

  • Many rides including a steel rollercoaster and 150ft sling-shot.
  • Friday night ‘Cruise Nights’ showcases custom cars, exotics and special interest vehicles – starts at 9pm.
  • Saturday ‘Cruise Nights’ showcases antique cars, hot rods, street rods from 1974 and earlier – parade starts at 8.30pm.
  • Thursday night is ‘Bike Night’, come to see all kinds of custom motorcycles – bikes start arriving at 6pm.
  • Wednesday nights are a new ‘Cruise In Night’ for cars 1987 and older, as well as a free Elvis style rock-n-roll concert performed on the main stage.

One of the best things to do in Kissimmee is to try an airboat tour. TJ’s airboat tours runs hour long tours along the shores of Lake Topopekaligia (or Lake Toho for short). You will be able to see native Florida wildlife including alligators, ospreys, turtles etc. Call ahead for exact pricing. There are special night tours during the summer months. Make sure to call ahead and reserve your place for the night tours.

Zipline Safari – a 2.5 hour adventure through the Florida tree tops. There are 7 ziplines and a whole series of rope bridges and wooden slatted bridges to navigate.

The longest zipline is 750ft long! The cost is $85 per person over aged 10 – Florida EcoSafaris run specials for groups, holidays and even night time adventures. This is the first and only zipline safari in Florida! It is also one of the newest things to do in Kissimmee.

Coach Safari

If you prefer to keep your feet firmly on terra firma, a coach safari tour is for you. You’ll board a large military looking vehicle that is raised up 5ft off the ground. This allows you to tour over many different terrains and take in great views of the Florida wildlife. Your guide will introduce you to all sorts of wildlife including turtles, eagles, white-tailed deer, black bear, alligators, great blue herons and many other birds and mammals.

Tours run twice per day at 10am and 1pm. Adults $28, children 6-12 $22, under 5s go free.

Horseback Safari

Why not try a guided horseback safari through Floridas historical horse trails? Tours are available for one, two or three hours and are led by experienced and knowledgable guides. Florida EcoSafaris also offer exdend 2 and 3 day overnight excursions.

Gatorland Florida Wildlife Park & Preserve

Gatorland Florida is one of the Kissimmee area’s oldest running attractions, way before Disney and Universal Studios became popular. This is a 110 acre wildlife preserve teeming with gators and crocodiles! Gatorland has shows within the park each day. You will see the crazy gator wranglers performing tricks and feeding monstrous gators.

There are other animals to see here too. There are over 1000 nesting birds, parakeets, lorikeets, giant turtles, emu, deer and snakes.

Characters in flight is Downtown Disney’s latest attraction. It’s a giant balloon – much larger than a normal hot air balloon – which is tethered to the ground. It then rises gently to a height of around 400ft, giving spectacular views of the Downtown Disney area and beyond. The balloon is decorated with memorable Disney characters including Mary Poppins, Aladdin, Dumbo and many more.

The gondola below the huge balloon holds up to 29 people, rides cost $16 per person and weather permitting, the balloon runs every day. Below are views from the balloon over Downtown Disney.

Fun Spot has amusement arcade games, multi-level go kart tracks and all sorts of rides that kids will love. Admission is free and you then pay for ‘armbands’ which will allow you to try out the different rides and activities. There is a location in Kissimmee and another on International Drive.

Racin Station is a small kids attraction with a go kart track, arcade games and 18 mini-golf course.

River Adventure Golf

An 18 hole mini-golf course themed in a Mississippi river style. The pinnacle of the course is the waterfall that cascades down and turns the water wheel. There is special 19th hole to try in order to win a free game. The scenery and attention to detail is lovely!

Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament

Medieval Times is one of the most popular dinner shows in the Orlando/Kissimmee area. Set in 11 century Spain, brave knights will joust on horseback to win the tournament. You will receive a three course meal in which you must eat with your hands – Medieval style! Kids will enjoy shouting and getting involved in the show.

Capone’s dinner theater has been entertaining visitors to Kissimmee for 17 years. This 1930s Chicago mobster style show will provide big laughs and great food. You’ll receive an all you can eat Italian style buffet PLUS unlimited wine, Bud Light draft, soft drinks, tea and select cocktails. Shows run 7 days per week, walk ins welcome, but call and reservations to be sure of a good seat!
